The purpose of a Health Information Exchange (HIE) is to enable the creation of an interoperable Electronic Health Record (EHR) for each individual by connecting the information contained in various organizations across the entire continuum of care. While HIEs are very complex and unique from one to the next, understanding the general foundation of HIEs is critical to the implementation of the technology.
