Economic Stimulus Learning Center – Healthcare

More than 1,500 health centers serving about 17 million people nationwide are expected to be built or upgraded using $1.5 billion in grant money in the stimulus package. Of this total, $862.5 million is for capital improvements, $512.5 million is for facility investment and $125 million is for health information technology (HIT) systems.

Capital improvement grants will fund construction, repair, renovation and equipment purchases (including some HIT) at community health centers. HIT systems/network grants will support the acquisition or expanded use of existing electronic health record networks (EHRs). And facility investment grants will fund about 100 significant construction projects, including equipment purchases.

Grants are being awarded to nonprofit institutions and organizations such as hospitals and universities. The application deadline for HIT and facility investment awards is Sept. 30, 2009. The deadline for capital improvement awards has passed. To learn more, click here.
