After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in August 2005, the city of New Orleans IT department, along with system integration consultants CIBER Inc., rebuilt the city’s critical infrastructure with the help of virtualization. As the city faced recovery and reconstruction, the IT department embraced the opportunity to completely rebuild its infrastructure into a comprehensive, centralized solution capable of supporting more government services. With limited funding and a tight schedule, the city and CIBER had to design and implement a scalable, high-performance solution with a strong disaster-recovery component.
