How it Works: Software Asset Management
Dell Software Asset Management simplifies and automates the process of inventorying and tracking software and licensing agreements, helping you to:
- Save money on software license costs and maintenance
- Stay in compliance with your contracts and applicable regulations
- Keep your client PCs and network secure
- Head off any compatibility issues prior to major software upgrades or hardware refreshes.
Automates the software inventory process
The service automatically serializes each PC to create a unique identifier that stays with it throughout its life and monitors devices, both inside and external to the corporate network. Information on installed applications (executable files and Add/Remove program tiles) and related usage is collected on the monitored devices and delivered to a Dell data center — all without end-user involvement. The Software Asset Management titling engine looks for patterns in the collected raw software inventory and distills it to the software applications and suites that are installed on each device. Dell has a dedicated team of software experts who monitor industry changes and product releases in order to maintain a comprehensive titling database. This database enables the titling engine to automatically resolve millions of executables into their licensed parent applications, versions and bundles/suites for easy comparison with license agreements. On-demand reports can be generated ranging from individual users to organization-wide.
Mitigate compliance risks
Software Asset Management provides you with a single repository for tracking and managing all of your software purchases, including licenses, upgrades and maintenance renewals. Software purchase information can be easily imported to the Software Asset Management database and is automatically entered for Dell Premiere/Dell ASAP customers in the US. Once the information is in the database, automated alerts are generated for contracts expirations and renewals, and detailed reports and queries can be run to ensure compliance with licensing contracts and applicable regulations.
Reduce costs
Software Asset Management helps you reconcile installed applications with what you have purchased and identify under- or over-licensed applications so that you can maintain compliance with your licensing agreements and avoid overspending. The service also monitors and provides detailed information on software usage so that you can quickly identify applications that can be eliminated or reallocated to other users in order to reduce costs.
Provide robust reporting
Dell Software Asset Management allows you to run comprehensive on-demand software and hardware inventory reports on managed PCs. Reports can be run on multiple levels, from an individual system to an entire organization.
Easily deployed and managed
As a cloud delivered software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution, the Dell Software Asset Management is a near maintenance-free solution with a predictable total cost of ownership and helps you manage your software assets more effectively and efficiently. Software Asset Management does not require any on premise infrastructure and can be deployed rapidly, with a typical deployment time of only a few days. Deployment can be reduced even further to a matter of minutes if your organization is already using the Dell Distributed Device Management — Software Distribution service — another component of Dell’s IT Management SaaS portfolio.
