Dell PAN System combines PAN Manager® software by Egenera® for Dell with leading-edge Dell PowerEdge™ M610 blade servers and the M1000e modular blade enclosure. Processing occurs on up to 48 blade servers in up to three M1000e enclosures. The processing area network (PAN) management services run on two PowerEdge R710 2U rack servers, which connect to the blade chassis over 10 Gb Ethernet (10GbE).

This combination provides a true dynamic data center starting at just 14 units of rack space, offering return-on-investment benefits of an implementation built on industry-standard servers.

The PAN software abstracts physical components, such as processing, I/O (input/output) and networking, so they can be managed as a policy-based, high-availability computing platform.

Together, this fabric and PAN Manager switching protocols form an I/O virtualization layer that can significantly reduce the number of peripheral interface devices needed, while helping reduce associated server power consumption.

  • Create flexible high-availability policies — Get automatic high-availability failover (N+1 high availability) without clustering. If a node fails, PAN Managers restart both the OS and the application on a hot spare or repurpose an existing node without any other clustering technology.

PAN Managers work in conjunction with the storage area network (SAN) to implement disaster recovery policies at a low incremental cost. Your disaster recovery configuration can be verified through simple testing.
  • Reduce server sprawl — Reduce your total number of servers, your I/O connectivity and the manpower required in your data center. Unused resources are pooled as bare metal, until needed, and then repurposed as new physical servers, virtual servers or new hosts, improving overall capital efficiency and reducing the need for new capital outlays.
