The Dell Difference

Total Cost of Ownership: PowerEdge M710 and ProLiant BL685c G5 Blades

Enterprises of all sizes are deploying, or considering deploying, blade systems as a way to consolidate resources and lower their total cost of ownership (TCO). These blade server solutions tend to be easier to deploy and manage than traditional rack servers, and offer lower energy consumption for both server power and cooling. To illustrate the cost savings, Principled Technologies (PT) compared the total cost of ownership for the full-height blade solutions from the Dell PowerEdge™ M710 blade server solutions and the HP ProLiant BL685c blade server solutions.

The Dell PowerEdge M710 had a lower TCO and yielded significant cost savings per rack, chassis and blade over a one-, three- and five-year time frame when compared to the HP Proliant BL685c G5 blade solution.

TCO of the Dell PowerEdge M710 and the HP ProLiant BL685c analysis was focused on these four key categories:
  • Hardware and support costs for the blade, enclosure and rack
  • Costs of system management software
  • Facilities costs, including per-rack space costs, power costs, cooling costs and Ethernet costs
  • Costs for out-of-box setup
