In 2002, the Victoria University of Wellington began the process of migrating its student administration systems from Sun™ Solaris™ to Red Hat® Enterprise Linux®. The new platform enabled the university to save money by standardizing on Dell running the Banner student administration system and a number of internal applications.
Since putting Red Hat Enterprise Linux into production — with Red Hat Enterprise Linux running on Dell™ servers — the university has saved more than NZ$16,000 (approximately USD$10,330) a year in support costs for student administration systems alone.
In addition to the annual support costs savings, the university also realized cost savings of 75 percent in upfront hardware costs.
