Performance Testing: Transitioning From 32-Bit to 64-Bit Servers

Principled Technologies tested the performance of migrating three legacy 32-bit application servers (an Active Directory domain controller, a server running Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 and a server running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003) to a single virtualized 64-bit Dell server running Microsoft Windows® Server® 2008 R2.

The study shows how moving 32-bit servers to virtual machines on a 64-bit Dell server offers cost, performance and space advantages while lowering the risks of migration to 64-bit. The three applications performed faster and better virtualized on the 64-bit host than they did on standalone legacy servers, even while the 64-bit host ran all three workloads. Power savings ran as high as 80 percent.

You can run your 32-bit applications better, while gaining 64-bit advantages and positioning yourself to move to 64-bit applications when the time is right.
