Department of Homeland Security

Federal Government fund

Congress approved $200 million for the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Under Secretary for Management. The fund will be used for the planning, design, construction, site security and information technology infrastructure to consolidate the operations of DHS on the site of the old St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C.

As part of that construction, a new U.S. Coast Guard headquarters, which will house a substantial amount of telecommunications equipment, is being built.

In addition, the stimulus package calls for Homeland Security to spend $100 million to expedite the deployment of security technology along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Under its Secure Border Initiative, Homeland Security hopes to install unattended ground sensors, radar and cameras for comprehensive awareness of activity along the border to give agents the information they need to make deployment and interdiction decisions in their area of responsibility. Moreover, it plans to install technology that will help it manage the large volume of information through a “common operating picture” to help with its tactical decision-making and coordinate law enforcement responses.
