Economic Stimulus Learning Center

Department of Defense

Federal Government Fund

A large portion of the Pentagon’s economic recovery funds will go to the construction of housing for persons serving in the Armed Forces, but $300 million is slated for 51 energy research programs to reduce Department of Defense's (DoD) energy demand by increasing fuel efficiency or advancing new technologies related to alternative energy sources.

Under this funding, DoD is investigating technologies that can satisfy capability gaps, present opportunities for military applications or spur initiatives within the energy industry. DoD’s efforts are focusing on engine efficiencies, cost-effective solar energy photovoltaics, fuel cells, alternative fuel testing, mobile waste-to-energy and tactical microgrids.
