University of California Irvine

We’re seeing great energy and space savings per amount of work done. With the advancements that Dell has embedded in the C6100 series servers running Intel Xeon X5600 series processors, we can get 150 percent of the work in 50 percent of the space.

Challenge

University of California Irvine (UC Irvine) School of Physical Sciences needed its own high-performance computing (HPC) cluster to provide its 30+ research professors and their teams control over their own destiny. Previously researchers handed out their data to HPC centers for analysis and did not have 24x7 access to it.

Solution
The university worked with Dell and Intel to help design and build an in-house HPC solution using Dell™ PowerEdge™ servers with Intel® Xeon® processors, Dell PowerVault™ direct attached storage arrays and QLogic® TrueScale™ InfiniBand interconnect.
Benefits
• 150 percent more research done in 50 percent of the space compared with previous solutions
• 24x7 access to data for researchers
• 10 federal grants won out of 11 grant applications
• 28 percent energy savings
