Employee engagement to make a difference
| Our employees are the driving force behind Dell's giving program Every year, Dell employees are building on a rich tradition of caring for our communities with team members from more than 30 countries who give in various ways, with a shared objective of empowering positive change one act at a time. It’s a legacy of giving that started when Dell was founded and over the last several years we’ve worked to develop a strong framework for supporting the engagement of our employees in giving opportunities. | |
Dell employees may share their expertise and provide support to the charitable causes and nonprofit organizations they are passionate about. Employees may also choose to give back through Dell’s signature giving programs Dell YouthConnect, the Dell Social Innovation Challenge and disaster relief.
With the encouragement Dell provides to its team members to set aside time to go into the community and volunteer, teams and individuals are continuously responding to the call to give by helping to ready youth for the digital workforce, helping educate the underserved and disabled, feeding hungry people, providing help during devastating natural disasters, supporting economic development and more. In doing so, we build relationships with partner organizations and employees build their own meaningful connections to their local community. Dell team members support over 4,615 charities around the world and have contributed more than 281,713 hours of volunteer time worldwide.
| Dell’s 'Make a Difference' employee engagement efforts focus on four areas: Give time Giving time is focused on volunteering and getting engaged in our Make a Difference online community. Many Dell team members volunteer their time, talents and energy to support charitable causes and nonprofit organizations. Team members may volunteer during Dell time, off Dell time, with their family or others, or on their own. A team member has the opportunity to track their volunteer work using the Make a Difference social media community, to create a portfolio of their volunteer work. Give money Dell team members around the world are given the chance to make a meaningful difference by contributing their monies and having Dell match their contribution dollar for dollar up to $10,000 per employee, per calendar year. Getting recognized Through our team member recognition programs, employees are given the chance to once again, give back by doubling their impact through their recognition. For every recorded 10-plus hours of volunteer service per quarter, team members are given a $150 cause card (in U.S. dollars) to redeem in our Make a Difference online community which gives them the option to donate to a qualified charity of their choice. Dell giving Champions Our Champion teams around the world are key to driving our giving efforts. We have more than 500 team members from around the globe that drive business unit, site or country-specific signature program initiatives. |
Using technology to connect employees with communities
Through the Make a Difference online community, employees can connect with one another, sign up for volunteer opportunities, give monetary donations online and track their giving efforts. Charities can also post volunteer opportunities, communicate their needs — for books or other essential items — and share stories and pictures from events. As a part of Dell’s network, organizations can reach over 100,000 team members globally within Dell.
| “Make a Difference is an important tool in helping me manage volunteer engagement, as well as a useful tool for volunteers themselves to share their experiences, find opportunities in areas of interest and interact with other volunteers.” — Ms. Bouchra Boutaleb, Youth Adolescent Development Officer, UNICEF Morocco |
Dell enables each employee to make a big impact
The Make a Difference online community is a good example of how Dell’s expertise in the power of technology and giving can come together with the passion of our team members. In fact, Dell employees can be the catalyst for enabling organizations to do their greatest work.
As an example, one Dell team member raised $1,500 for Action for Children, one of our strategic giving partnerships, in under one month by making a fundraising page on Make a Difference community and sharing it externally with family and friends and internally with colleagues.
Dell then matched that employee’s raised funds dollar for dollar, which totaled $1,000 additional contributions to the charity. Dell matches all global team member fundraising efforts within the community, dollar for dollar up to $10,000 USD per employee, per calendar year.
