Dell and Product Environmental Industry Groups
Dell delivers the latest energy-efficient best practices and technology standards to customers in part by working with industry groups and participating in global initiatives, such as the following:
American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE): ASHRAE advances the art and science of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to promote sustainability.
Business Applications Performance Corporation (BAPCo): BAPCo is a nonprofit consortium that develops and distributes a set of objective performance benchmarks based on popular computer applications and industry-standard operating systems.
Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI): CSCI is an association of companies promoting improved energy efficiency in power supplies and enabling power management in computing environments.
Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF): The DTMF is leading an industry effort to ensure that all energy-related and power consumption components in a system are interoperable, can communicate with management systems and can support virtualization.
Energy Conservation Center Japan (ECCJ): The EECJ helps to promote energy efficiency, reduce global warming and encourage sustainable development.
European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) International: Originally the European Computer Manufacturers Association, ECMA is an internationally based standards organization that is leading the development of international IT standards, including an effort focused on an energy benchmark tool for the ENERGY STAR® 5.0 standard.
The Green Grid: The Green Grid is an association of IT professionals that seeks to lower the overall consumption of power in data centers worldwide. As a founding member, Dell joined other IT companies to encourage the private and public sector to develop and use power-conserving information technologies.

Minimum Efficiency Performance Standard (MEPS): The governments of Australia and New Zealand developed the MEPS to improve the energy efficiency of appliances and equipment. This standard reflects the basic tenets of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR program.
Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC): Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation is a nonprofit corporation formed to establish, maintain and endorse a standardized set of relevant benchmarks for the newest generation of high-performance computers.
SPECpower: SPEC’s Power Group is a workgroup that developed an industry-standard benchmark for 1U/2U servers.
SPEC Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (GWPG): SPEC’s GWPG is a workgroup that has begun developing an industry-standard benchmark for measuring professional workstation power consumption in relation to performance.
EPA Project: Dell is actively engaged in the EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) Flame Retardants in Printed Circuit Boards project. This project is focused on identification of the flame retardants used by laminate manufacturers. It aims to better understand the environmental and human health impacts of new and current materials that can be used to meet the fire safety requirements for circuit boards.

High Density Packaging User Group (HDPUG) Halogen-Free Projects
Since 2001, the HDPUG as been at the forefront of evaluating halogen-free materials within the electronics industry. In 2008, Dell led the Halogen-Free Properties project in HDPUG, which published a comprehensive Halogen-Free Guideline. Increased access to this information will enhance supply chain adoption of halogen-free components. Dell also leads a brominade flame retardants/polyvinyl chloride (BFR/PVC)-free Cables Project with the aim to overcome the technical and supply chain challenges faced with the adoption of BFR/PVC-free cables and wires.

IPC
Dell co-chairs the Low Halogen Electronics Standard Task Group within IPC (4-33a). This task group is developing an industry standard for low halogen electronics titled IPC/JEDEC J-STD-709, "Definition of Maximum Limits on the Low-Halogens Bromine & Chlorine Used in Materials for Certain Electronic Components and Assemblies". As the industry transition continues, this standard can be used to define maximum limits for halogen content as well as harmonize compliance assurance activities within the industry.
