Virtual appliances are pre-built, ready-to-deploy software-based virtual machines optimized to perform specific tasks. Because they're downloadable, they're an excellent way to try an IT solution before you buy. Using a virtual appliance gives you the chance to really see how a software program or solution actually looks and feels — without having to set up a complex, separate test environment. These appliances provide much greater flexibility than a demo, because you actually can work, hands on, with the real product.

Virtual appliances are typically available as a free download. Some offer full features, but only for a limited time. Others are trial versions with some features disabled. Support for virtual appliances and free hypervisors is provided by their respective vendors.

Dell has teamed up with key partners such as VMware®, Microsoft®, Symantec™, F5 Networks®, Reflex Systems, Altor Networks, BayScribe, Enterasys®, Proofpoint™ and Certeon® to bring you some of the best virtual appliances available. Virtual appliances can run on VMware ESX Server™, Microsoft Hyper-V™ or Citrix® XenServer® platforms.
