Letter From Michael Dell

Michael DellCEO Michael Dell is personally committed to the company’s diversity and inclusion programs. Why? Because making diversity and inclusion a business imperative depends on leadership.

“Diversity and inclusion are longstanding cornerstones of our global business. Employing a diverse workforce that reflects our customer base provides us more perspective and drives the best possible value for our customers.”

— Michael Dell

Global Diversity Council

Michael Dell chairs the Global Diversity Council. He and seven other executives from across the globe review policies, action plans and progress to make sure Dell continues to maximize diversity as a competitive advantage and integrate it throughout our business.

Employee Engagement

Michael Dell shared why he believes diversity and inclusion are important when he hosted a May 13 event to share his thoughts, answer questions and listen to more than 500 Employee Network Group members and their guests on the topic of diversity and inclusion. Here is a summary of Michael’s very interactive and robust discussion:

“We live in a time of incredible change and opportunity. There are significant global demographic shifts happening in every corner of the world. A few interesting facts we discussed:

  • For every one baby born in the U.S., 10 are born in China and India.
  • In the U.S., people of color are becoming the majority.
  • The next generation of our workforce is driven by values and work-life balance.
  • The majority of small businesses are created and led by women.

Diversity and inclusion are a competitive business advantage. We can better serve diverse global customers when we leverage the full benefit of the collective experiences, insights and talents of our global workforce at all levels of the organization.

To achieve our vision for an even more diverse and inclusive global company, we established a global diversity strategy. This strategy is reviewed regularly by the Global Diversity Council, which I chair. Our strategy is focused on:

  • Strong, visible leadership commitment and clear expectations on accountability for diversity and inclusion
  • Genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion built into our business practices
  • Thorough integration of these behaviors in our talent and performance management

While we have made significant progress and Dell is recognized by many as a leader in diversity and inclusion, we need to do more. Extending our leadership here is in the best interest of our customers, team members, shareholders and our company. I am excited about how we can help the world address some very big opportunities in education, healthcare, and bringing technology and services to new consumers and small businesses and to the developing world. Diversity and inclusion are a bridge between our workforce and a diverse marketplace, and we can leverage this to meet those global challenges and the aspirations of our diverse customers.”
