Finding Your Kind of Cloud

One size doesn't fit all in cloud computing. The technology is so flexible and provides benefits in so many areas of IT that everyone's design is different.

Clouds can be public or private (or a combined hybrid):

In a public cloud, the computing resources are owned and operated by a third-party provider (whether you subscribe to an application hosted by the provider or have the provider host your application).
A private cloud is a cloud architecture you construct to host your applications and IT services within your own data center.

Three types of services are commonly delivered from clouds:

Software as a service (SaaS) — An application, such as email or data backup, delivered from the cloud to users' browsers
Platform as a service (PaaS) — Application development, deployment and hosting running in a cloud and delivered to developers and users over the internet
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) — Virtual servers, virtual clients or remote storage that runs in the cloud and is accessed by users over the internet
